Sunny Citron essence is the scent of summer. Citron expresses a sublime citrus scented oil pressed from the peel of the Sicilian fruit – a sizeable citrus, heirloom and ancient, with a thick, spongey, fragrant peel.

For a few years, we have been missing this organic, aromatic gem. Luckily, fragrant fortune has finally bestowed us the fruit of a special citron project that we have been working on with our dedicated distiller in Sicily. Grown and distilled exclusively for Libations, this labour of love, as the yield is precious, offers a supernal citrus aroma that soars to the nose, ready to repose a hammock of harmony in your mood and mind. The eternal sunshine of this redolent rind has reveled in culinary creations and apothecaries since antiquity; it gleefully exalts the spirit, and punctuates all manner of perfumes with its jovial, tenacious top-notes. Find your invincible summer with this delightfully dear aroma that emanates the zest of summer’s cheer.

“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.” – Albert Camus

Uses: Lovely travel companion. Muse the mind in mediation. Nestles nerves. Diffuse to gleefully amuse ambience. Mix into massage blends, a few drops for a cheery bath, and a delight to inhale in the salt pipe. Lovely addition diluted in skin serums with Rosehips and Jojoba for smooth skin and to lessen the appearance of blemishes and rosacea. Citron’s strong silage is perfect in perfumery and colognes as a jaunty and more tenacious top note. Lovely in teas and honeys. Fabulous for food preservation and innovation.
Caution: Photosensitive. Dilute before applying to skin. Avoid exposing skin to sun after applying.
Constituents: Citron is characterized by abundant limonene, gamma-terpinene, geranial, geraniol neral, nerol, and monoterpene aldehydes with accents of alpha- and beta-pinene and myrcene, sesquiterpenes, and aliphatic aldehydes, including a trace of β-Ionone, that imparts Citron’s distinctive aroma.

Differing from citrus distillations which are commonly copious with essential oil, extraction of Citron’s essence is a more diligent endeavor due to the fruit’s dry pulp with very little juice, along with the spongey albedo inside the leathery, fragrant flavedo that wants to retain the essential oil. After the Citron orbs are gathered by hand in organic groves, our distiller coaxes the peel’s precious perfume. The pressed peel reveals this resplendent rind’s rich botanical-gifts, yet the light yield makes this an extra exquisite citrus.

This heaven-sent citrus scent is supernal Citron sunshine to your mind. This essence, also known as etrog, exudes drops of lemon-lime lavishness and happy hints of fluttering floral notes that mesmer summer. Inhale Citron’s sublimely citrus synergy and take your senses on a stroll through a citrus grove where honeyed wildflowers mingle with the zest of life.

“In addition to the well-known lemon, farmers in Sicily also grow Citrus medica. These deep green lemons are much more sour, have a much thicker skin, and are preferred for manufacturing candied lemon peel, used for baking at Christmas. The essential oil of Citrus medica is rare. Its fragrance is richer and fruitier than that of the ordinary lemon.”
~ Susanne Fischer-Rizzi, Complete Aromatherapy Handbook

“One of the ancestral citrus species; the essential oil has sharp, characteristic citrus odor with intensity and depth, and better tenacity than other citrus species; dominated by d-limonene. It is mentioned in Islamic texts; in ancient Greece it was macerated in wine to counteract poisoning… use in therapeutic perfumes for its tenacity and depth.”
~ Jennifer Peace Rhind, Aromatherapeutic Blending: Essential Oils in Synergy

“The yellow glistens.
It glistens with various yellows,
Citrons, oranges and greens
Flowering over the skin.”

~ Wallace Stevens

“Heaven's last best gift, my ever new delight!
Awake: The morning shines, and the fresh field
Calls us; we lose the prime, to mark how spring
Our tender plants, how blows the citron grove,
What drops the myrrh, and what the balmy reed,
How nature paints her colors, how the bee
Sits on the bloom extracting liquid sweet.”
~ John Milton, Paradise Lost
